They may appear as capacities, ministries, or
particular manifestations of divine help. The focus of the New Testament is not self-display but the good of the
community (1 Cor 12:4–11; Eph 4:11–16; 1 Pet 4:10–11).

The Greek word charisma (plural charismata) stresses a gift rooted in grace. Paul also speaks of different
services, activities, and manifestations: varied expressions of God’s work within one body (1 Cor 12:4–7).

Five principles for faithful understanding
  • Source: God gives graciously; spiritual gifting is not earned by social status or superior holiness (1 Cor 12:4–11).

  • Purpose: Gifts serve the common good and mature the whole church (1 Cor 12:7; Eph 4:12–16).

  • Diversity: The same Spirit equips different members differently. No believer embodies every ministry (1 Cor
     12:12–30).

  • Character: Gifts are not a substitute for the fruit of the Spirit or Christlike love (1 Cor 13; Gal 5:22–23).

  • Order: Public expression must be intelligible, tested where appropriate, and directed toward edification (1 Cor
     14:26–33, 40).

GIFT, TALENT, FRUIT, AND OFFICE ARE NOT IDENTICAL

Talent: a natural or learned capacity. Gift: gracious Spirit-enabled service. Fruit: the character that grows from life in
the Spirit. Office: a recognized responsibility in church governance. These categories can overlap, but one must not
      be substituted for another.

A Christian may develop a natural aptitude for teaching and also exercise a Spirit-enabled teaching ministry. Yet neither
competence nor spiritual experience exempts a person from learning, humility, scrutiny, or wise safeguards.

ENGLISH MASTER STUDY · SECTION 03

THE WAY | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY STRAND 2 • DOCTRINE

02 | SCRIPTURE AND METHOD

How the Bible speaks about gifts
The New Testament gives several overlapping lists rather than a single exhaustive catalogue. Each text has its
own emphasis and pastoral setting.

Romans 12:3–8 — Gifts within a humble community: prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, mercy.

1 Corinthians 12:4–31 — Diverse manifestations and ministries in one body: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healings, miracles,
prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation, apostles, teachers, helps, and administration.

1 Corinthians 13–14 — Love governs the use of gifts; intelligibility and order guide corporate worship.

Ephesians 4:7–16 — Christ gives equipping ministries such as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers for
maturity and unity.

1 Peter 4:10–11 — Believers steward varied grace as speaking and serving ministries; hospitality belongs in this
surrounding pastoral context (v. 9).

Why this guide contains 18
“Eighteen” is an editorial selection, not a biblical declaration that only 18 gifts exist. We combine service/helps
and leadership/administration as related teaching categories while noting that their underlying Greek
expressions and contexts are not identical. We treat shepherding and teaching separately for practical clarity
even though Ephesians 4 links the two closely. Some Christian writers classify offices and functions differently.

      HOW TO READ THE PROFILES

For each gift you will find its principal scriptural locations, a careful description, a church example, and a marketplace
example. Marketplace examples are ethical applications of the gift’s service orientation; they are not claims that Paul
directly listed corporate job functions as spiritual gifts.

Two interpretive boundaries matter: no single list is exhaustive, and not all denominations agree about apostolic authority,
prophecy, healing, miracles, tongues, or the nature of “words” of wisdom and knowledge. This resource states the biblical
data before giving examples.

ENGLISH MASTER STUDY · SECTION 04

THE WAY | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY STRAND 2 • DOCTRINE

03 | CHRISTIAN FORMATION IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Church and marketplace
The New Testament chiefly describes spiritual gifts in the gathered and scattered life of Christ’s people.
Christians also live and work in families, schools, businesses, healthcare, public service, and communities. These
are meaningful places to demonstrate Christlike service, though the specific gift lists do not automatically label
every occupational competency a spiritual gift.

The church: equip the body
The church is the primary setting named in the gift passages. A teacher helps people interpret Scripture. A
person with gifts of service supports ministries that others can carry out. A leader equips the saints rather than
accumulating control. Even quiet contributions may be indispensable (1 Cor 12:22–26).

The marketplace: embody faithful service
A Christian educator may teach with unusual clarity; a manager may guide a team with care; a business owner
may use resources generously. In these contexts, the relevant aim is to bless people with integrity and
humility—not to make religious claims compulsory for coworkers or customers.

Five guardrails for marketplace application
  • Respect: Share faith freely but never use job power, grading, employment status, or service access to pressure
     religious participation.

  • Competence: Spiritual conviction does not replace qualifications, clinical care, financial diligence, or factual
     evidence.

  • Consent: Offer prayer, mentoring, or personal counsel with permission and appropriate boundaries.

  • Accountability: Make major decisions transparently; test claims and welcome correction.

  • Love: Measure usefulness by whether others are served, protected, taught, and strengthened—not by visibility
     or applause.

      CORE QUESTION

Where has God placed you, what needs are genuinely present, and how can your Spirit-shaped service help people
flourish without seeking authority over them?

ENGLISH MASTER STUDY · SECTION 05

THE WAY | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY STRAND 2 • DOCTRINE

04 | PROFILE GUIDE • SENDING AND SPEAKING

Gifts 01 & 02

      GIFT 01 Apostleship
                        1 Cor 12:28–29; Eph 4:11

      WHAT IT IS

A sending and pioneering ministry associated with establishing and strengthening Christian communities. The
first apostles had a foundational witness and authority in the early church; whether the title applies in the same
      way today is debated.
      IN THE CHURCH

Support cross-cultural missions, help plant congregations, build accountable teams, and train local leaders rather
than making a ministry dependent upon one personality.
      IN THE MARKETPLACE

Apply a pioneering, service-oriented mindset to founding ethical community initiatives or education programs.
Business ambition alone is not proof of apostolic gifting.

Interpretive / ethical note: Distinguish the original apostolic witness from contemporary mission leadership; no claim to
      unaccountable authority.

      GIFT 02 Prophecy
                        Rom 12:6; 1 Cor 12:10; 14:3, 29

      WHAT IT IS

Spirit-prompted speech that calls people toward God’s truth and may strengthen, encourage, correct, or console
a congregation. Christians differ on its forms and whether revelatory prophecy continues today.
      IN THE CHURCH

Offer tested, Scripture-consistent exhortation under appropriate church discernment; invite evaluation instead of
      demanding unquestioning acceptance.
      IN THE MARKETPLACE

Speak with biblical moral courage about dishonesty or injustice and offer gracious counsel. This is an application
of the principle, not a license to issue binding workplace revelations.

Interpretive / ethical note: Test claims; reject manipulation and claims that override Scripture (1 Thess 5:20–21).

ENGLISH MASTER STUDY · SECTION 06

THE WAY | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY STRAND 2 • DOCTRINE

04 | PROFILE GUIDE • WITNESS AND CARE

Gifts 03 & 04

      GIFT 03 Evangelism
                        Eph 4:11; 2 Tim 4:5

      WHAT IT IS

A particular effectiveness in communicating the good news of Jesus and inviting people to respond. They are examples for
reflection—not tests for assigning gifts or promises of particular outcomes.

A growing congregation
Teaching explains Scripture; shepherding notices a struggling family; helps coordinates meals; leadership designs a fair care
process; generosity makes the response sustainable. No gift works alone.

An education-access initiative
A Christian team may bring wisdom to a difficult decision, administration to delivery, service to student support, and mercy
to learners facing barriers. Professional safeguarding and academic standards remain essential.

A workplace crisis
A supervisor listens before deciding; an encourager offers truthful support; a person gifted in mercy helps a vulnerable
colleague find appropriate assistance. None of these gifts justifies coercion, gossip, or ignoring workplace procedures.

A multicultural community gathering
Evangelistic witness may be offered voluntarily and respectfully; teachers explain plainly; language access is arranged
through skilled translators; any public tongues practice follows the congregation’s biblical convictions and rules of
interpretation.

      ONE BODY, MANY MEMBERS

A wise leader does not ask, “Who has the most impressive gift?” but “Who can serve this need faithfully, together
with others?” Read 1 Corinthians 12:14–27 and consider who has been overlooked.

ENGLISH MASTER STUDY · SECTION 15

THE WAY | SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY STRAND 2 • DOCTRINE

06 | PERSONAL AND COMMUNAL DISCERNMENT

How gifts may be discerned and developed
The New Testament does not supply a standardized “spiritual gift test.” Questionnaires may prompt reflection,
but they cannot replace prayer, community confirmation, observed service, doctrinal faithfulness, and fruit over
time.

1 Pray and study
Read Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12–14, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4 slowly. Ask what each text emphasizes about love and
edification.

2 Notice real needs
Ask which people or ministries need help. Begin with service rather than seeking a prestigious label.

3 Serve in concrete ways
Try teaching, practical assistance, encouragement, outreach, or other opportunities appropriate to your competence and
church setting.

4 Invite honest feedback
Ask trustworthy church leaders and those helped by your service: Was it accurate, loving, effective, and appropriate?

5 Grow with accountability
Seek training, accept correction, address weaknesses, and keep exercising gifts under the rule of love.

      DISCERNMENT PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, teach me to receive Your grace humbly, to notice the needs of others, to serve with integrity, and
to welcome the Spirit’s formation of my character. Make my gifts useful to Your people and to my neighbors. Amen.

Keep a simple practice journal: Record the need you noticed, what you did, whom it served, what feedback you received,
and what you learned. Which gifts are easily overlooked in your congregation? What would change if they were valued?

05. Why should an apparent gift not be equated with maturity, truthfulness, or permission to lead?

06. How does Ephesians 4 define the purpose of leaders who equip the saints?

07. What is the difference between Spirit-enabled service and ordinary professional competence?

08. What safeguards are essential when someone claims prophecy, healing, or special revelation?

09. How could a believer exercise generosity, mercy, teaching, or administration in a school or business without pressuring
others?

10. What one concrete act of service could you begin this month?
