But when the decisive moment arrived, she understood that silence was also a decision. Her story offers a searching lesson for leaders: the right action must also be taken at the right time.

Listen to Episode 2 of The Leader’s Walk Podcast: Esther: When Courage Meets the Right Moment.

Leadership is more than knowing what to do

The Law of Timing reminds us that leadership requires more than identifying a good decision. We must also discern when and how to act. A wise response offered carelessly, too early, or too late can lose its power. Esther’s example shows that discernment does not mean avoiding action; it means preparing to act faithfully.

Preparation often comes before purpose is visible

Esther’s influence was being formed before she knew the crisis ahead. She listened, accepted wise counsel, and exercised restraint. Those quiet habits mattered before anyone called them leadership qualities. Preparation often grows in ordinary days, when no audience is watching and the larger purpose is not yet clear.

When Haman’s plan threatened the Jewish people, Esther faced a dangerous choice. Approaching the king without an invitation could cost her life. Mordecai’s question challenged her to see her position as a responsibility to serve others, not simply a place of privilege.

Courage and timing work together

Esther called for a fast and prepared herself before entering the king’s presence. Her courage was shaped by prayer, community, and purpose. Even after the king extended the golden scepter, she waited for the right moment to reveal the danger. This was not passivity. It was discernment.

There are times when leadership requires immediate action. There are other times when wisdom says: prepare the ground, gather the right people, and wait until the truth can be heard. Patience is not always wisdom, and urgency is not always courage. Leaders need to examine both.

Use influence for a purpose larger than yourself

Esther’s intervention mattered because it helped preserve her people. Her position became meaningful as she used her access on behalf of others. Leaders can ask: Am I in a season of planning, planting, persevering, or producing? Frustration grows when we demand a harvest during a season meant for planting—or keep preparing after the moment to act has arrived.

A reflection for leaders

Is there a conversation you have delayed, a person you need to defend, or a responsibility you can no longer avoid? Seek God, prepare carefully, listen to wise counsel, and act when the moment comes. Do not let fear disguise itself as patience, or impatience disguise itself as courage.

Read Esther 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Then listen to the full episode for a deeper reflection on courage, preparation, and the Law of Timing.

The Leader’s Walk Podcast is a production of The Way Christian Educational Leadership Institute.
